Earlier this week The Guardian published a letter of advice to the new Labour leader from Polly Toynbee and David Walker. It was drawn from their book, “The Verdict: Did Labour Change Britain” and based on the successes and failures of the Blair and Brown years. Importantly, their first piece of advice to Ed Miliband is:
Do learn from their intimidation by a mainly hostile media that blew them off course. Earn respect by refusing to kowtow to Rupert Murdoch. ….. Hatch a plan: restore pre-Thatcher media rules restricting multiple ownership and disallow non-British taxpayers.
The plan we hope Labour will “hatch” is to press for a media commission, but it needs to happen sooner rather than later. Only then will Ed Miliband and his shadow cabinet have the opportunity to prepare and propose policies which are in the wider interests of social justice and not in the narrow interests of the powerful few.
